New Max movies: all of the new films to stream in September 2023

New Max movies are added to Warner Bros Discovery’s (WBD) super streamer every month. With September now upon us, then, it’s time to give this article its customary update.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of every new film set to debut on Max between September 1 and 30. That includes WBD Originals, as well as licensed content that’s joining one of the world’s best streaming services for the first time, or being re-added to its movie back catalog. We’ve also handpicked five must-see movies that are coming to Max before the month is out, too, to spotlight in their own section with reasons why they’re worth watching ASAP.

If you’re on the lookout for a more comprehensive rundown of the best Max movies around, you’ll want to click on the aforementioned link to find out more. For now, though, these are all of the new Max movies that have arrived on the platform this month.

New Max movies: the best films to stream in September

Blade

Release date: September 1

A decade before Marvel changed the superhero movie game with 2008’s Iron Man (and the cinematic franchise juggernaut that followed), New Line Cinema brought everyone’s favorite superpowered daywalker to the big screen.

1998’s Blade, which starred Wesley Snipes as the titular vampire hunter, was as stylish as it was gratuitously violent. And, especially where the latter is concerned, it also helped to lay the foundations for plenty of other R-rated action and/or superhero films that have followed since.

It isn’t a perfect movie, or one of the best superhero movies, by any means. Its plot fizzles out after a highly enjoyable first hour, while its penchant for over-the-top gore will desensitize you after a few too many bloody brawls. Still, Blade is a largely fun romp while it lasts and, with the MCU’s Blade reboot still a long way off, it’ll satiate your appetite for vampire-based superhero fare. Blade II and Blade: Trinity are also available to stream, but neither as solid as the trilogy’s first offering.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

Release date: September 1

Ryan Gosling is a man in demand after his star turn as Ken in Barbie, aka one of 2023’s best new movies. His performance as a character whose sole job is “just beach” is sure to have given his film back catalog a timely boost in recent weeks – and it just so happens one of his best films has landed on Max.

2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love won’t be for everyone, but the rom-com helped to cement Gosling on the A-list actor map. Sure, his breakout turns in The Notebook and Blue Valentine ingratiated him to audiences. But Crazy, Stupid, Love was the flick that proved he was more than a movie’s proverbial eye candy and an actor who could do comedy just as well as drama. While we wait for Barbie to debut on Max, you’ll want to stick this one on your must-watch new Max movies list.

Friday the 13th movie series

Release date: September 1

Spooky season is upon us, which means it’s time to dust off your favorite horror movies, throw on your black colored clothes, and eat as much Halloween candy as possible.

With most of the Friday the 13th franchise now available to watch on Max, too, you’ve got some brilliant movies to stream before everyone’s favorite horror-fuelled holiday rolls around. Admittedly, the first eight Friday the 13th films vary in quality – the 1980 original is still the best of the lot, while the less said about the third, eighth, and 10th entries, the better. If you’re looking for a solid slasher-style horror film franchise to binge pre-Halloween, though, there are few that can match the greatness (and so-bad-it’s-good vibes) of the Jason Voorhees-fronted series.

Source Code

Release date: September 1

One of the best sci-fi movies of the last 15 years, Source Code is a thrilling action spectacle complete with some riveting twists and turns.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as US Army Captain Colter Stevens, who finds himself thrust into an eight-minute digital recreation of a real-life train explosion. Tasked with identifying the person responsible for the heinous act, Stevens is forced to relive the life-ending event, albeit in a simulation, in excruciating, rage-inducing, and guilt-fed detail.

With some subversive storytelling you won’t see coming and a typically electrifying performance from Gyllenhaal, Source Code is a smart, stylish, and highly satisfying movie offering from Duncan Jones, aka the son of iconic musician David Bowie. Get one of September’s new Max movies watched ASAP.

American Sniper

Release date: September 21

Bradley Cooper is one of the most underrated actors of his generation, and his superb performance in 2014’s American Sniper is another example of how impressive his acting talents are.

The Clint Eastwood-directed biographical war flick sees Cooper play Chris Kyle, aka the most successful marksman in US military history. While he was celebrated as a hero by his nation, Kyle’s 255 kills (from four tours during the Iraq War) significantly impacted his mental health and personal life.

Hailed for Eastwood’s sensitive and considered direction, plus Cooper’s stunningly emotional turn as Kyle, American Sniper delivered on its depiction of the horrors of war and the isolation veterans feel upon their return from active duty. A visceral, dramatic, and harrowing watch.
